Sine arte non est vita.

Inspired by New York City’s artistic flair, these are some of the works of art I have created throughout my studies as well as in the years thereafter:

The painting displayed below is one of my major artworks inspired by a wide array of surrealistic influences; especially, by one of my favorite painters, Salvador Dali (see gallery, painting one). Its central element is an hourglass, flying in the middle of the desert, surrounded by what is actually expected to be its content: sand. Instead of sand however, it contains a number of clocks, incessantly ticking and counting every minute of every hour. The large clock on the bottom is showing the current time by the use of a battery-operated watch, which is attached from behind the painting. The pompous, angelic wings symbolize the innocent nature and divine character of time, which is beyond our control. The combination of ordinary and depictive elements in an uncensored, irrational and unrestrictive way goes hand in hand with the basic idea of surrealism that their arrangement must be entirely open to imagination. Sky and landscape create an oneiric atmosphere expressing the unconscious omnipotence of dreams while putting the surrealistic into the real. Furthermore, the concrete symbolism and metaphoric elements are complemented by the signpost to the right. This reference to the saying “TIME FLIES” goes a step beyond the figurative into the literal, where words and ideas confront each other, almost commenting the composition as it puts the surrealistic into words.
